Maria Wasti reveals why she’s away from showbiz

Published on: June 27, 2025 2:30 AM

Senior television actress Maria Wasti has shed light on her prolonged absence from the entertainment industry, saying she has not found a script compelling enough to return to screen.

In a candid appearance on a private comedy talk show, Wasti – known for her powerful portrayals on television since the 1990s – spoke openly about her artistic journey, her current break from acting and her personal reflections on the evolving landscape of showbiz. “There is no specific reason for my distance from acting,” she told the host. “I am simply waiting for a role that captures my heart – something new, creative and challenging that truly tests my skills as an actor.”

The actress, who has remained a prominent figure in the drama industry for over two decades, revealed that while she continues to receive offers, the scripts have failed to inspire her.

“When a good script with a unique character comes my way, I will definitely work again,” she said.

Wasti also expressed concern over the repetitive themes dominating the television industry today, lamenting the lack of diversity and depth in current storytelling. “Characters are not being written with layers anymore,” she said. “There are many shades within a person, but unfortunately, we see the same topics and stories being recycled.”

Reflecting on her earlier days with the state broadcaster, she recalled the roles she played on Pakistan Television with deep affection. “I still love the characters I portrayed in those days – I used to completely lose myself in them,” she said, alluding to a time when storytelling was more nuanced and emotionally engaging.

The actress, known for her subtle and emotional performances, also shared her thoughts on love, describing it as a “selfish emotion” that has the power to deeply transform a person.

During the show, Wasti narrated a humorous yet unsettling episode involving an overly enthusiastic fan who once followed her home. “I sensed something was off, so I quickly shut the door and told him to come back the next day,” she said, laughing. “My acting skills really came in handy in that situation.”

Maria Wasti’s remarks have struck a chord with many in the industry and among fans, especially at a time when calls for more original and meaningful content are growing louder.
