LaBubu, a doll that’s both adorable and creepy, is taking the world by storm. While some find it cute, others are unsettled by its odd appearance—especially if the colors aren’t quite right. Despite this, fans are lining up across the globe to get their hands on this quirky toy.
Originally released as a collectible doll, LaBubu’s popularity has now extended to items like jewelry, bags, and t-shirts. The doll’s fan base includes not just kids and teenagers but also celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and BLACKPINK’s Lisa.
Created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung and launched in 2019 by the Chinese company Pop Mart, LaBubu is part of “The Monsters” series. Interestingly, the name “LaBubu” has no real meaning. However, its large eyes, sharp ears, toothy grin, and soft body have captured hearts everywhere.
One unique feature of these dolls is that they’re sold in “blind boxes,” meaning buyers don’t know which model they’re getting until they open the box. This element of surprise has made them even more addictive for collectors.
Pop Mart, which began as a small Beijing store in 2010, skyrocketed to success with blind box toys, especially after introducing LaBubu. By 2020, the company’s stock price soared by more than 500%, and its CEO Wang Ning became one of China’s richest people with a net worth of $2.27 billion.
Today, Pop Mart operates over 2,000 vending machines in more than 30 countries. The global craze surged after BLACKPINK’s Lisa posted photos with LaBubu in April 2024. Since then, celebrities and influencers have jumped on the trend, boosting its fame on platforms like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram.
With a price tag of around $6.95 (approximately PKR 2,000), LaBubu dolls are affordable, making them popular among children, teens, and even adults in their 30s. Online, millions enjoy watching unboxing videos to see which version of LaBubu comes out, especially the most sought-after “chaser” model.
