Three Democratic lawmakers in the US House of Representatives introduced a war powers resolution on Monday to limit President Donald Trump’s military actions against Iran. This move came shortly after Trump claimed that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire. The resolution is aimed at restoring Congressional authority over war-related decisions.
Representatives Jim Himes, Gregory Meeks, and Adam Smith released a joint statement criticizing Trump for launching strikes on Tehran’s nuclear sites without proper consultation or Congressional approval. They stressed that the president must not be allowed to take the country to war unilaterally, especially without serious debate or planning.
However, with the Republican Party holding a majority in both the House and Senate, the resolution faces tough odds. House Speaker Mike Johnson has already stated that now is not the time to consider limiting the president’s war powers, making it unlikely that the resolution will pass both chambers.
Tensions have escalated sharply since June 13, when Israel launched attacks on Iran. In response, Iran targeted a US base in Qatar earlier this week. While Trump and his allies argue the strikes were necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, critics say his broader goals include regime change, as hinted in his recent social media posts.
Democratic lawmakers expressed concern that Trump’s actions are part of a larger plan rather than a limited military response. They argued that serious matters like military operations require more than just a president’s impulse—they demand careful deliberation and legal authorization from Congress.
The dispute comes at a time when the region is already tense following Israel’s prolonged conflict in Gaza. While Iran maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and is part of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, Israel—believed to possess nuclear weapons—remains outside the treaty and says its goal is to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power.
