ISLAMABAD: NADRA has introduced a major change allowing married women to choose whether to list their father’s or husband’s name on their Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC). This step aims to give women more control and flexibility over their identity documentation.
The decision comes after the Interior Minister’s instructions, with formal approval from the federal cabinet. NADRA has now amended the National Identity Card Rules of 2002. Cases involving CNIC seizure, cancellation, or restoration will now be decided within 30 days.
To improve security and prevent fraud, NADRA has enhanced even non-chip CNICs. These cards will now include English and Urdu details, a QR code, and features similar to smart cards, without any extra fee. If someone made a CNIC with incorrect details but now wants to correct it voluntarily, they will be legally protected.
Changes have also been made to the child registration process (B-Form). Children under 3 years old will not require photos or fingerprints. Those aged 3 to 10 must provide a photo and iris scan, and children aged 10 to 18 must also give biometrics. A new B-Form will be required for passports, but older B-Forms won’t be canceled.
Furthermore, the Family Registration Certificate (FRC) is now a legal document. Citizens must confirm the accuracy of family details. People with multiple marriages must include all family members in one FRC. Families can update records through NADRA offices or the mobile app, ensuring all family members are documented correctly.
