GENEVA: European leaders urged Iran to keep diplomatic channels open with the United States to resolve tensions over its nuclear programme. The call came amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes on Iranian targets.
After meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Geneva, the foreign ministers of Germany, France, Britain, and the EU said Iran showed willingness to continue discussions. “The Iranian side is ready to further discuss all important questions,” said German FM Johann Wadephul.
British Foreign Secretary David Lammy stressed the urgency of avoiding further regional escalation. He said talks must continue despite the dangerous moment the region faces. French FM Jean-Noel Barrot added that military force can only delay, not resolve, the nuclear issue.
Barrot also warned against foreign attempts to force regime change in Iran. “It is dangerous to try to impose change from the outside,” he said. The EU’s Kaja Kallas echoed the need for ongoing dialogue and called for de-escalation.
Iranian state media said Tehran has not walked away from talks. However, it refuses to negotiate while under Israeli attack. Meanwhile, Israel claims its strikes are meant to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons — an accusation Iran denies.
