NICOSIA — Cyprus revealed on Sunday that Iran has asked it to deliver “some messages” to Israel, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate in the Middle East.
President Nikos Christodoulides confirmed the development while urging all parties to show restraint. Although he did not disclose the content or sender of the messages, he acknowledged that communication came after Cyprus’ foreign minister held talks with his Iranian counterpart on Friday night.
The Cypriot president also spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as well as leaders from Egypt, the UAE, and Greece, highlighting Cyprus’s active role in regional diplomacy during this crisis.
Meanwhile, Christodoulides criticized the European Union for its sluggish response to the growing conflict. He stressed that the EU must act swiftly if it truly wants to play a meaningful geopolitical role. Cyprus has already requested an urgent meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council.
Interestingly, Iranian projectiles aimed at Israel were visible from various parts of Cyprus on Friday and Saturday, underscoring the island’s geographic and strategic proximity to the conflict zone.
Cyprus has also offered to help evacuate foreign nationals from the region and urged all nations involved to avoid actions that could worsen the already volatile situation.
