United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has urged both Iran and Israel to stop the rising conflict and avoid further military action. His message came after Israel carried out targeted airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which led to retaliatory missile attacks from Iran aimed at Tel Aviv.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Guterres said he was deeply concerned about the rapidly worsening situation. He warned that the region cannot afford a wider war. “This is a moment when all parties must show restraint,” he wrote.
The UN chief added that Tehran’s missile strikes on Israeli cities could lead to more destruction and civilian suffering. He also reminded both countries that peace cannot be achieved through violence. Instead, he called on world powers to help mediate the situation.
Guterres emphasized that the world is watching, and the risks of escalation are high. He said, “It is time to stop everything. Peace and diplomacy must prevail.” He also highlighted the importance of protecting diplomatic efforts around Iran’s nuclear program, which are now under serious threat.
The UN is in contact with major global powers to push for de-escalation and dialogue. Guterres ended his message by saying that continued conflict would only bring more tragedy and instability to an already tense region.
