The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Council has once again approved a resolution to fine citizens for using municipal tap water to wash vehicles in public spaces, including streets, alleys, and commercial centers.
At the council meeting, Mayor Murtaza Wahab proposed a Rs10,000 fine to discourage the misuse of Karachi’s limited water supply. He clarified that the fines will be issued based on complaints filed by Union Council (UC) chairpersons, and the collected amount will be reinvested in the same UC for local development. The move aims to promote responsible water usage amid the city’s worsening water crisis.
PPP member Najmi Alam pointed out that areas like Do Talwar frequently see people using line water to wash vehicles, with water spilling out onto the roads. He called for stricter monitoring and enforcement.
Meanwhile, KMC opposition leader Saifuddin Advocate criticized the mayor for focusing on long-term plans while the city currently suffers severe water shortages. He noted the K-IV water project’s cost has jumped from Rs20 billion to Rs200 billion and accused authorities of intentionally damaging pipelines. He announced that opposition parties plan to stage street protests.
Mayor Wahab responded by assuring the council that a dedicated session on water management will be held next week to address these urgent issues.
