Crackdown continues: Karachi commissioner bans Qingqi rickshaws on two more major roads

Published on: May 19, 2025 5:21 PM

KARACHI – Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi has ordered a ban on Qingqi rickshaws on two more main roads, further tightening restrictions on unauthorized and disruptive public transport. The decision came during a high-level meeting on city transport issues.

The commissioner also directed the complete removal of the Lea Market bus terminal, citing its contribution to traffic congestion and poor urban planning. He instructed the transport department to launch strict action against illegal Qingqi rickshaw stops and unregistered routes across the city.

In particular, the commissioner called for legal action against Qingqi rickshaw drivers operating unlawfully in the Korangi area. He emphasized that drivers violating traffic rules or creating roadblocks should face FIRs and penalties under traffic laws.

This move follows earlier restrictions placed last month on One Plus Two and One Plus Four motor cab rickshaws. These restrictions, enforced under Section 144 of the CrPC on the recommendation of DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah, remain in effect from April 15 to June 14, 2025.

Authorities confirmed that rickshaws are already banned on major roads like Shahrah-e-Faisal, I.I. Chundrigar Road, and Shaheed-e-Millat Road. Officials warned violators that they would be prosecuted under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Moreover, Qingqi rickshaws and other unauthorized vehicles operating on self-declared routes are being blamed for severe traffic disruptions. The ban also extends to sensitive areas including the Abdullah Shah Ghazi Shrine, Stadium Road, and other important city zones.
