Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appeared in Lahore’s sessions court through video link in a defamation case against Imran Khan. The case involves Imran’s old claim that Shehbaz offered him Rs10 billion to stay silent on the Panama Papers issue. Shehbaz denied the allegation and said it hurt his reputation badly. He called the claim more damaging than millions of pamphlets.
During the hearing, the court allowed Shehbaz to testify remotely. Imran Khan’s lawyer cross-examined him and asked about past interviews. The lawyer asked if Imran later denied the bribe claim in a TV show. Shehbaz said he did not know of any denial and wasn’t sure about the exact words used.
However, Shehbaz strongly said the statement clearly pointed toward him. He stated Imran didn’t have to name him directly. Shehbaz added that no printed posters were used but the impact of TV was greater. He said such public accusations damage a person’s respect deeply.
The case goes back to 2017 when Imran made the original claim. Shehbaz responded by filing a Rs10 billion defamation suit. In 2020, he also asked the court for faster hearings. The case had remained pending for several years before it resumed again this month.
Now, the court has adjourned the case until May 24 for the next hearing. The judge is reviewing testimonies and evidence. As the legal battle continues, both leaders remain firm on their positions. This case could set an important example for defamation claims in Pakistan.
