In a significant move aimed at providing relief to consumers, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has announced a reduction of Rs. 1.55 per unit in electricity prices across the country. The price cut is applicable for the third quarter of the fiscal year under an adjustment plan. According to NEPRA’s notification, this price reduction will be effective for three months, from May to July, benefiting consumers nationwide, including those in Karachi. The price reduction will provide a total relief of approximately Rs. 52.6 billion to electricity users. The adjustment is a result of the financial year’s third-quarter fuel price adjustments, with the per-unit cost of electricity being reduced by Rs. 1.55 for the specified period. Karachi’s consumers will also benefit from the February fuel price adjustment, with a reduction of Rs. 3.64 per unit, reflected in their May bills. However, lifeline consumers will not be eligible for this relief. Additionally, March’s fuel price adjustment has been implemented, resulting in a reduction of Rs. 0.28 per unit. This reduction marks a welcome development for consumers, as it comes at a time when energy prices have been a significant financial burden for many households. The government hopes that this price cut will provide some relief amidst the broader economic challenges facing the country.
