LAHORE: Farooq Alvi of Skyview Golf Club won the 41st Millat Tractors Governor’s Cup Golf Championship, contested over 54 holes at the par-72 Lahore Gymkhana Golf Course, here on Sunday. An event of prestige and stature, it attracted noteworthy golf playing amateur competitors from all over the country. As expected, the participating golfers were dexterously proficient and the fight for top honours turned out to be intense. In the end the illustrious and triumphant one turned out to be Farooq who compiled three rounds net scores of 69 in the first round, another admirable 69 in the second round and a not too glossy net 78 in the final round. Although this final day’s modest effort did not impede his victory standing as the highly esteemed one of the Governor’s Cup Golf Championship. And in the process the successful outcome of his resolute and determined effort was dispiriting for quite a few enthusiastic adversaries who were yearning for a favourable result. Farooq accomplished his goal with a three rounds net aggregate score of 216, and this brought him elevation and upgradation as a golfer of merit. Without doubt Ghulam Qadir of Nowshera contested appreciably well and put up a determined effort but a couple of missed putts landed him in the runners up slot and he felt upset about the fact that he lost to the ultimate winner by one stroke. He had a net score of 217 as against the winner’s score of 216. As for Farooq, he managed to grapple well with some tension causing moments. His big plus point was that the putting prowess on the greens never got diluted. Added to that, most admirable were his fairway shots and on all the par fours and par fives. Another competitor who failed by the barest of margins was Farid Maneka of Lahore Gymkhana. He achieved a net score of 217 and was tied with the runner up Qadir. But as per rules, the better position goes to the player who was a step ahead on the final day. Others who put up appreciable and laudable efforts were Hamza Kardar, Asim Zafar, Ahmed Jibran and Farooq Khan. Hamza finished at net 218, Asim at net 219, Jibran and Farooq at 221. Saadullah Chaudhry also finished at 221. In the gross event, the first gross was won by Salman Jehangir with scores of 75, 76 and 73, aggregate tournament score being 224.
