Pakistan’s Education Crisis

Published on: May 7, 2024 1:51 AM

According to a report from a government organization in Pakistan, 260 million children are currently out of school. These children have either never attended school or, if they did, they dropped out after some time. This poses a significant challenge for Pakistan, especially as the population grows, the number of out-of-school children is also increasing. Therefore, the Pakistani government has decided to implement an educational emergency for the next four years.

An educational emergency conference will also be held, with participation from all four provinces’ education ministers. The objective of this educational emergency is to increase the education budget by up to five percent and implement educational reforms. For the first time in Punjab’s history, a District Education Officer Literacy Conference was held on May 2, 2024, organized by the Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department in collaboration with UNICEF. The purpose of the conference was to highlight the importance of education and take effective measures to increase the literacy rate. This conference received significant praise at the provincial level, with plans to hold similar conferences annually. Panel discussions were also held during the conference, addressing challenges faced by the department and outlining action plans to address them.

The department presented its past objectives and achievements to stakeholders, demonstrating the performance of various districts. The Literacy and Non-Formal Basic Education Department has established over 20,000 non-formal schools across Punjab, with nearly six million children receiving education. The purpose of these non-formal schools is to provide education to children who are out of school. Similarly, in the district of Muzaffargarh, there are 1,260 non-formal schools, with over 40,000 children enrolled. Muzaffargarh district was awarded the first position for successfully achieving its goal of enrolling out-of-school children for over ten years. Additionally, under the GPE Education Program, 262 schools in Southern Punjab achieved their enrollment goals, with Muzaffargarh district also securing the first position for its outstanding performance. In recognition of Muzaffargarh district’s excellent performance, the District Education Officer-Literacy, Tahira Rafique, was honored with commendation certificate and a shield.Speaking at the conference, DEO-Literacy, Tahira Rafique stated that the achievement is the result of the hard work of her teachers and team, as they have timely achieved their goals.
