HYDERABAD: The legendary advocate for women’s education and emancipation, Dadi Leelawanti Harchandani passed away in age of 101 on Friday.
Leelawanti, daughter of Hotchand Wadhwani belonged to a literate middle class family and was an adviser to the Accountant General (AG) of Sindh. She was born on December 16 and passed away in Hyderabad at her father’s cottage in Hirabad. Her career in music started in 1940 when she was sharing her services at Teachers Training College Hyderabad.
She launched a community centre with the help of UNICEF Bureau of Curriculum, and always raised her voice for the rights of women during her tenure as parliamentarian.
Former Secretary of the Sindhi Language Authority Tai Joyo, Karachi Director of Radio Pakistan, Kosuar Buriro, and other notables gave their condolences and praised her contribution to the welfare of society. Her funeral was held at a Hindu Graveyard on Hali Road in Hyderabad.
