Sir: I write with reference to President Musharraf’s latest instructions to my fellow countrymen that it is every Pakistani’s responsibility to ensure that the sanctity and reverence of national institutions, such as the armed forces, is maintained. How painfully funny this latest statement is! Asking us to revere the Pakistan Army, while turning a blind eye to how this very institution has held the country hostage, destroyed most civilian institutions, dismissed a serving chief justice and made a mockery of our justice system, pillaged our economy over so many years, and sacrificed any and all chances of progress at the anvil of Kashmir, is indeed a joke.Yes, every Pakistani should be proud of the guardians of our borders, but should not the guardians realise that respect is earned, it cannot be extracted with force. Are the generals prepared to re-orient the institution and get it out of the political swamp?SALMAN H ZAIDIUK
