Sir: Can someone explain why the nation should accept the “deal” between Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and General Musharraf? In the name of ‘greater national cause’ both of them are working for their personal gains. This is especially true for Mohtarma who did not lead the pro-democracy movement in Pakistan but now wants to reap all the benefits. The lawyers’ movement has provided her an opportunity to prove herself to be a national leader of stature. Instead, she is busy making concessions so she can return to power. She is the one who always complained that she had very limited power in 1988 due to ‘arrangements’ that were made with then-president and the chief of army staff. If this deal goes through then her days in power will be less than 20 months and will permanently damage the integrity of the only moderate national party of the country. The workers and other leaders of PPP should reject any such deal. The country, party and principles should come before personal interests. NAYYAR IQBALUSA
