Sir: It has been widely reported that the APDM, led by Nawaz Sharif’s PMLN, is inclined to boycott the upcoming general elections. However, such a boycott would not have the intended impact in terms of de-legitimising the process. Mr Sharif would have to participate to ensure that he remains politically relevant. Boycotting would also relieve pressure on the PMLQ, which would be contrary to the ambitions of the APDM. Therefore, Mr Sharif and the APDM parties must participate, win seats and bring change from within Parliament House instead of merely issuing statements for the next five years. Sharif owes it to his supporters who came out in the thousands to welcome him. They expect change and the only way Sharif can make that happen is by participating in the January 8 elections.
