Sir: The Foreign Office has announced that the water dispute with India will be resolved within days. Pakistan and India had been trying to figure out the best way to resolve the distribution issue, given the construction of dams on the Chenab, a ‘Pakistani’ river, and the subsequent shortage of water on the Pakistani side. Water is a critical resource, and we must ensure equitable and fair distribution on both sides of the border, as we have to share this resource. Given that the welfare of people on both sides of the border is at stake, politics and gamesmanship must not take precedence over cooperation and understanding. One hopes that the Foreign Office’s statement comes true, and that India and Pakistan move forward towards a long-lasting agreement on water distribution. SHAKIL AHMEDIslamabad
