Sir: In all major cities of Pakistan, the ‘mad motorcyclist’ phenomenon has been troubling citizens for years now. Motorcyclists have been found enjoying unbridled freedom on the roads. They ignore traffic rules, break lanes and overtake without indication, and carry more passengers on motorcycles than is permitted by law. In most cases, the traffic wardens stationed nearby watch idly as these mad motorcyclists zoom around. Most motorcyclists do not even have working brake/indicator lights, making life hell for other responsible motorcyclists and motorists. Several fatal accidents have been caused by rowdy motorcyclists. These habits are hardened in motorcyclists because they are not warned and punished over petty infringements. They are then emboldened by the lack of punitive action taken by the traffic police. This attitude must change, with punishments handed down to violators without prejudice. Only then will these motorcyclists stop assuming breaking road laws as their birthright.SHAFQAT HUSSAIN QURESHIKarachi
