Sir: Israel’s rejection of a cease-fire proposal has further muddied the already terrible situation in Gaza. If reports are to be believed, Israel is now readying its ground troops and armoured divisions for a full-scale ground assault of Gaza. Israel claims that it will not stop the offensive until Hamas is no longer a threat. However, that aim is likely to be met with failure as this kind of offensive only increases the legitimacy and strength of an embedded radical group like Hamas. The only casualties are the Gazans, who have nowhere to go. One hopes that saner elements on both sides will realise the folly of violence, and will sit together to thrash out a viable plan for peace. This poor region has suffered for too long.
