Sir: It was interesting to read that the Environment Protection Department of the Government of Punjab has formed environment clubs in schools. While many will consider this a waste of time, I think it is an excellent move. A lot of the problems related with the protection of the environment are related to the attitude of the public. There will be no opposition to anti-green laws or activities if the people do not consider the harm that is caused by them. Therefore, educating children, who are the next generation, is an effective way to ensure that we breed a society and a culture which recognises the importance of the environment. When these children grow up, they will have moulded their lifestyles and their activities to ensure that they cause as little harm to the environment as possible. Further, unlike the current generation, they will be passing on the same ethos to their children and beyond. The Punjab EPD deserves credit for this good policy, and should be encouraged by all. Parents should also encourage their children to sign up for these clubs at the participating schools.MAHIRA SIALLahore
