Sir: While the power crisis of today relates to the shortage of supply as compared to growing demand in Pakistan — leading to hours of load shedding, another serious problem is with our crumbling power infrastructure. A lot of line losses take place in Pakistan; further, the wiring within cities is highly problematic. It is common to see confusing jumbles of wires at almost every electricity pole and fixture. These are not only bad for power officials who are trying to fix a problem; but are also dangerous because they can lead to short circuiting and electric fires. We only need to look as far as the recent fires at Gakkhar Plaza in Rawalpindi and Liberty Market in Lahore to see the damage faulty wiring can cause. Therefore, apart from ensuring that we have an adequate supply of power, the authorities should also ensure that our infrastructure is brought up to acceptable standards.KAMIL GHANILahore
