Sir: The political turmoil that has been kicked off by the Supreme Court’s judgement disqualifying Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif could not have come at a worse time for Pakistan. Already, agitation is gaining momentum in many key parts of Punjab, and given the PMLN’s support for the lawyers’ movement and the Long March, it is likely to envelop the whole country soon.Perhaps the leadership of both the PPP and the PMLN should have realised the circumstances facing the country, not just themselves. The most critical issues facing us today are security and the economy. And the government has been especially flat-footed as far as the economy is concerned. While we have received emergency IMF aid, what we need is for our political leaders to sit down and thrash out the best possible policy for these trying times. The people of Pakistan need food, shelter and healthcare above all other concerns, and the politicians should recognise that.NAUMAN AFZALLahore
