Wildfires raging across Greece for nine consecutive days have rendered the fight to save “the lungs of Athens” a lost cause. With more than 600 firefighters, including reinforcements from several European neighbours, supported by a fleet of water-dropping planes and helicopters, there is little that is not being tried to resuscitate the mainlands from their nightmarish suffering during a summer of record-breaking heat. The past week saw the historic north-western fringes plagued by daily outbreaks of dozen fires, largely triggered by gale-force winds and hot, dry weather conditions, which play a significant role in firefighting efforts. As the European Union blames climate change for the yearly occurrence taking a turn for the worst (2022 brought back horrifying memories of the 2017 wildfire wreckage), an anti-migrant frenzy has whipped up bizarre allegations against asylum-seekers. That a universal deterioration, largely driven by our capitalistic greed, is being used to stoke the feathers of yet another monster–bigoted nationalism–speaks volumes about how the world is now forced to scrape the bottom of the barrel. A huge blaze believed to have caused at least 20 deaths, scorched 77,000 hectares of land destroying renowned bird sanctuaries should have been the last straw for the developed world to sit together and carve a reliable, effective line of action. Simply waving hands or blaming the developing economies for following their lead could never be enough to cool down Mother Nature. Instead, a group of anti-migrant “revolutionaries” rolled up their sleeves and jumped in the ring with an agenda of their own: kick those who have already fallen, push them against the wall and blame them for everything that goes wrong in the face of this earth. Considering a clearly-worded denunciation from the government authorities about the allegations making rounds on social media, mainstream television channels and newspapers should have prioritised creating a national consensus in such pressing times. Colourful headlines and ratings could wait for the flames to go down and normalcy to prevail. *
