Sir: This is with reference to Hassan Kilde Bajwa’s letter “Fundamentally flawed”. (Daily Times, March 1) Mr Bajwa rightly points out that the deal is a non-starter simply because it legitimises the behaviour of anti-Pakistan elements. While the population of Swat has welcomed the deal, they will soon realise what a massive mistake the NWFP government has made. Consider the most recent statement from Sufi Muhammad, the person who negotiated this deal with the government on behalf of the terrorists. He has said that democracy is “a sin”. How can such elements be trusted with the lives of Swatis? The people of Swat want justice and peace, but they will surely not accept it if the terrorists end up defining that for them. Very soon, issues will crop up regarding the courts that will be set up under the Nizam-e Adl regulation. Will the Taliban determine who sits in the courts and what brand of sharia will be applied, or will the government do that? Will the Taliban give up their arms and reject violence? Will they stop target-killing their political opponents and beheading “spies”? Of course not. And those that believe the Taliban will stick to their word are deluding themselves. One only needs to look at the way the Taliban treated previous “peace deals” to understand that this is only a gimmick for them to regroup, re-arm and re-supply themselves. And once they are ready, unfortunately, violence and anarchy will return to Swat.NAUMAN ZAHEERIslamabad
