Sir: According to an archaeologist, there are more than 500 historical mosques, mausoleums and buildings in various cities of Punjab. In any other country this news would have been greeted with jubilation but in our country no one is willing to pay any attention to this. We are not great connoisseurs of history. The proper maintenance of most of the well-known monuments in the province has already been affected by holding official and unofficial functions there. The poor state of monuments across the province, and the country for that matter, reflects our lack of awareness as a nation of the importance of these historical places. It is sad to see that we do not recognise the importance of preserving our heritage. The state of neglect in preserving archaeological sites is evident from the remains of Harappa where items of archaeological importance have been stolen. This depicts a rather sad picture of this nation.NABEELA HASSANLahore
