Sir: The blast at Karachi University campus is one of the most disturbing events of the year. The SSP special investigation has mentioned that the students of Imamia Students Organisation preparing for prayers were targeted with an explosive device filled with ball bearings, injuring four students. According to my knowledge, some religious parties have been active at various national institutions, particularly in Karachi and urban Punjab for quite some time. However, as one can expect, they have never been obstructed from trading their hatred beliefs. The media on Tuesday has reported Karachi University teachers linking this event to the student groups backed by the religious political parties. They have further warned that the situation will never improve until these parties stop interfering in the educational institutions. No place for prayers has been provided to the Shia community at Karachi University campus and the students and teachers are left with no option other than to perform their prayers in an open area near the main cafeteria, where they were attacked by an explosive device on Tuesday when they were about to offer Zuhr prayers. I request the Karachi University administration to put a stop to the belligerent activities of the parties responsible for Tuesday’s event. IRFAN HUSSAIN London, UK
