Sir: The government has hinted at a three percent increase in the electric tariff from next month. Economic activity is touching its lowest ebb. Inflation is hovering around 15 percent and the added burden will cause havoc in the masses. The latest report of the Sustainable Development Policy Initiative (SDPI), an Islamabad based think tank, regarding the Tribal Area Electric Supply Company (TESCO) has stunned and bewildered many. TESCO provides electricity to more than four million consumers of FATA. The average monthly purchase of electricity by TESCO exceeds Rs 1 billion, whereas collection against this is only five percent. The report reveals that since 2005 Rs 84 billion have been paid out of national resources to cover TESCO’s losses. This discrimination needs to be checked, as no one should get an extra privilege in this country. Electricity should be supplied to FATA at par price and not as a free luxury.
