Interior Minister Rehman Malik has made yet another confusing statement. Mr Malik said that all those involved in the assassination of former prime minister and PPP leader Benazir Bhutto have been identified and arrested. “We have achieved our goal of uncovering the whole conspiracy and people behind the assassination,” said Mr Malik. This is indeed good news except for the fact that one of the most important culprits is still roaming free, i.e. former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf. When Ms Bhutto was assassinated, most people had an inkling that Musharraf was somehow involved in this huge conspiracy. It is not possible to carry out such a well-planned assassination and then hose down the crime scene without the involvement of someone right at the top of one-man rule. When the PPP-led government came into power after the 2008 elections, the people of Pakistan expected them to find the killers of Ms Bhutto and bring them to justice. Instead, we saw hardly any movement on the issue. Mr Musharraf was allowed to leave the country, that too with a guard of honour, by the PPP government after he stepped down from the presidency. The PPP may have had its reasons for allowing Musharraf to go scot-free. It did not want to upset the army by prosecuting one of their own. Unfortunately, the army is still not happy with the PPP and will never be. Fortunately, the wheels of justice — however slowly they grind — grind fine and have finally reached the main accused. An Anti-Terrorist Court (ATC) has ordered that Musharraf be arrested and the investigating team contact Interpol in order to bring him back to Pakistan. General (retd) Musharraf was the president when Ms Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007. Recent investigations have uncovered that he was the one who ordered that the crime scene be hosed down. In any case, the buck stops with him. It is now Mr Malik and his government’s responsibility that the main accused in the murder of the PPP’s leader is brought back to Pakistan to face trial. While those who were behind the conspiracy have been apprehended as per Mr Malik’s statement, many would like to know what happened to those who were responsible for Ms Bhutto’s security. Food for thought surely, Mr Malik. *
