The legal proceedings in Nawab Akbar Bugti’s murder case are going on at a snail’s pace. Those accused in the case have not been presented in court so far. However, at the latest hearing of the case, the Balochistan government has sought more time from the Balochistan High Court (BHC), as it is yet to formally request the federal government in written form for the extradition of former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf and others nominated in the Bugti murder case. Jamil Akbar Bugti severely criticised the provincial government for deliberately delaying the case. However, he has high expectations from the judiciary. Even after a lapse of five years after Nawab Bugti’s murder, there has not been any meaningful progress. It is obvious that the provincial government is not pursuing the case properly and delaying the case proceedings in the court intentionally. It has not yet taken any action against the accused in the case, some of whom are still living in Pakistan, let alone the extradition of the prime accused, former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf. There are reports in which the Bugti family has claimed that all documentary evidence against General (retd) Musharraf in the Bugti murder case has been lost. The police and the district administration of Kohlu are blaming each other for the loss of the case files. This negligence is very suspicious and inexcusable. It reinforces the notion that those in charge are deliberately spoiling the investigation process. The prime minister’s announcement about setting up a judicial commission to probe the Bugti murder case was also uncalled for. It had a negative impact on the case as the announcement came at a time when the BHC had asked for issuance of red warrants against the accused. Such a judicial commission might distract focus from the BHC proceedings in the case. Still the provincial government is dragging its feet over the issue despite the federal government’s ‘expression of readiness’ to take action against the absconding accused in the case. Its reasons might be trepidation and fear as the accused are big shots and the army might earn a bad name in the end but justice has to be served. Bugti’s extrajudicial brutal murder and his secret burial were highly unjust and criminal. His killers should be brought to book. Justice should be pursued to the end however bitter it may be. *
