Sir: All public and private schools reopened after an unusual winter break of 24 days. Parents sent their children with smiling faces but at heart they felt threatened as the terrorist event of December 16 scrolled in their minds in a stream of consciousness. The Chief of Army Staff was at the gate of the Army Public School to welcome and encourage young students. It is also worth mentioning that a team of psychiatrists was arranged to deal with the traumatic condition of children saved luckily in the attack at Army Public School in Peshawar. Indeed, parents cannot stop children from going to school because without education children would be mere animals. Education is such an important jewel in the crown of innocents that parents are willing to send their children at any cost. The difference between terrorists and civilized human beings is obviously of education. It is also evident that the war against terrorism can’t be won only with bombs. We should support the government in showing no mercy to these killers but the clash of mindsets can be transformed only through education. Therefore the government may include in its agenda to counter terrorism the implementation of 100 percent free education to all poor and underdeveloped segments of society. The next generation of these extremists may be educated to become responsible citizens of Pakistan. Every child is born innocent. It is hoped that the government will make sincere efforts to root out terrorism and it will ensure free education for all in order to win this war. NAZIA JABEEN Lahore
