Sir: The violation of merit and discipline during the selection of diplomats for the foreign missions will further tarnish the image of Pakistan abroad. At a time when the country is facing the backlash of terrorist activities and the green passport has become the symbol of suspicion and doubt in the world, the government is indulging in political favouritism, which is illogical. It is very disappointing that the incumbent government is resorting to nepotism while making the appointment of its favourites in missions abroad. The hiring of learned, skilled and pragmatic personnel with strong credentials in diplomatic practices is direly needed. It is also necessary due to the attitude of our eastern neighour, which does not miss any opportunity to isolate, defame and distort the image of Pakistan. Amid such circumstances, political appointments would act as the final nail in the coffin. Propaganda and diplomacy are the most modern tools in contemporary times to enhance national attributes of power and build a soft image of the state in the world. It is necessary that skilled diplomats are deployed for the achievement of the supreme national interest outside the ambit of national boundaries. SHAH RUKH HASHMIChangchunChina
