Sir: The set-up of the local government is the spirit of democracy. Our mainstream political parties like the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have been avoiding the holding of local government elections, although their leaders are never tired of telling the people that democracy is imperative for the prosperity of the masses. I do not understand why the PML-N is against the holding of elections on a party basis when it is having a heavy mandate in the National and Punjab Assemblies? Why has the Supreme Court to intervene for holding the local government elections? Why has the High Court to tell the politicians that non-party elections are against the Constitution of Pakistan? How long will the people of Pakistan have to suffer from such rulers who never read the Constitution and do not know their obligations and responsibilities towards the people who have voted them to power?
