Sir: Nowadays, chewing Gutka (betel nut) has become a fashion among our people. Even children are seen using it openly. Due to its flavoursome taste, easy availability and low price, it is popular among poor children. Many hospitals are full of patients affected by this curse. It is more hazardous than tobacco. The excessive use of Gutka can eventually lead to throat cancer among its users. It can also alter blood sugar levels and raise the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Apart from these harmful effects, doctors say, it can also cause loss of appetite, unusual sleep patterns and loss of concentration. Besides, Gutka users are easily identified by their prominently stained teeth. These stains are difficult to remove by normal brushing and usually need the attention of a dentist. It is unfortunate that despite knowing its harmful effects, people continue to use it. The government should take a stand on this serious issue. Gutka should be banned everywhere so that the precious lives and health of people could be saved.SYEDA MAHA QADRIKarachi
