Sir: I take a stroll at the Shalimar Cricket Ground on a daily basis. Last week, the Pakistan Telecommunication Limited organised a cricket match between telecom companies at the venue. It was a pleasant treat. I could see many expats and locals standing around the ground to witness the much loved game of cricket. While watching the match, a thought came to my mind that there should be some serious efforts to promote cricket and other nationally popular games, especially for the youth of Islamabad. As far as I know, the city of Rawalpindi has an active sporting scene. Even the sports complex, though located in Islamabad, has major attendance from Rawalpindi. I wish big corporate companies could sponsor sports camps for the youth that would promote different kinds of sports amongst the youth of Islamabad that otherwise does not have any other healthy physical engagement. My own son was excited to see Shahid Afridi and immediately remarked that he would like to play cricket with me in the ground sometimes. I would thus appeal to these telecom companies to consider establishing sports camps where their already established teams can volunteer to train the youth of Islamabad and engage them in healthy activities.
