KARACHI: Despite passage of 24 hours, authorities have failed to drain out rainwater from several areas in Karachi following the winter’s first rain that lashed the city on Friday and Saturday. The rain had inundated various low-lying areas in the city. Due to poor sanitary conditions, people residing in the low-lying areas had to face problems as water entered their houses. Various roads and streets of the city were wearing the look of a pond after the rain, exposing the government’s tall claims. Various roads in the Old City area and the university road were submerged. The city’s downtown area including Mithadar, Kharadar and surrounding areas of Wazir Mansion, the birth place of Quaid-e-Azam located in Lyari town, were flooded with rainwater. The business hub in city’s old area, Jodia Bazaar was also submerged by rainwater mixed with sewage. Various roads near Dow University, Civil Hospital, Federal Urdu University, Saddar Town, Azizabad, Nazimabad and North Nazimabad were also seen flooded with rainwater until Sunday evening. No arrangements were seen to drain out the water from these roads. Talking to Daily Times, KMC’s senior director Masood Alam said that the rainwater could not be drained out because all the major drains are chocked in the city. Also, the contract for cleaning the drainage system had expired in December last and now we have requested the provincial government to renew the contract to clear the drain system,” he added.
