The Mijwan 2017 Fashion Show took off to a great start. Named after a village in Uttar Pradesh, NGO Mijwan Welfare Society, founded by Shabana Azmi’s late father Kaifi Azmi was launched with the goal of creating employment opportunities for women, and reviving the art of chikankari embroidery. The NGO is now headed by Shabana along with Naresh Goyal’s daughter Namrata. Shabana therefore spearheaded the show and thanked everyone for making it a grand success. While Shahrukh Khan and Anushka Sharma were the show-stoppers of the big night, the show was attended by many Bollywood stars like Sangeeta Bijlani, Kiran Rao and Huma Qureshi, looking lovely as always. Also seen were Ayan Mukherji, Farah Khan, Rahul Bose, Saiyami Kher, Neetu Kapoor, Diana Penty and Shabana Azmi among others. Designer Manish Malhotra, who had designed all the outfits for the show, said he was proud to be a part of the charity event. “I feel proud to generate steady work for the craftsmen all through the year. Later, they work on their creations and send these to the designer which are then modified with embellishments and cutwork,” Malhotra said in a statement. The designer added that this year’s collection comprises of “more contemporary gowns, fringe tops in summer fabrics of net, chiffon and cotton”. Javed Akhtar took the opportunity to talk about the late Kaifi Azmi and his philanthropic work.
