Sir: In a recent survey conducted by the government of India, it has been reiterated that Indian Muslims have the lowest standards of living when compared to all other communities. The survey confirms that the average monthly per capita consumption (MPCE) at the all-India level was Rs 901 in the villages and Rs 1,773 in the cities. Muslims were at the bottom in rural areas, with an average of Rs 833. In urban areas, the Muslim average MPCE was also the lowest at Rs 1,272. Since 1947, Indian Muslims remain poverty stricken and largely ignored. Opportunities for Muslims to avail basic education, healthcare and employment have always been at the lowest ebb. These facts prove the government’s continued bias and lack of intent. Both Congress and the BJP are actively lobbying for Muslim votes. Over 370 million Indian Muslims remain keen to explore what remedial measures, if any, are being considered to rectify the situation and improve their standard of living. DR SELMA TABASSUM Dubai
