ISLAMABAD: The security establishment and some senior ministers have shown anger and serious concern over the humiliation of Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz by the Indian government during the Heart of Asia conference in Amritsar, India, and demanded that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif changes policy towards India and Afghanistan. The Pakistani leadership appears to be following the ‘appeasement’ policy vis-à-vis India, as it has become a tradition that whenever India levels concocted allegations against Pakistan at any forum, Pakistani high-ups present on the occasion refrain from giving a matching response, security and opposition sources said. Sources said that some senior cabinet ministers, including Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Petroleum Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, had expressed anger over the Indian government’s behaviour with the Pakistani delegation, including media persons. They said that Sartaj Aziz had failed to present Pakistan’s case in strong way in response to baseless allegations by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. They were of the view that the adviser should have responded to both Modi and Ghani in strong words during the conference, or should have boycotted the conference in protest. Sources said that Pakistan was the country that had sacrificed the most in the war against terrorism, yet India and Afghanistan were blaming Pakistan for regional instability. Sources disclosed that a majority of the cabinet members and security establishment officials were not in favour of sending Sartaj Aziz to India under the prevailing circumstances, but Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Office babus convinced the premier to allow the adviser’s participation in the conference.
