If you thought coffee trends couldn’t get any weirder after turmeric lattes, think again. Now caffeine-loving hipsters are adding tonic water to their espresso – and the drink is taking Instagram by storm. Fans in far-flung destinations including Japan and Serbia have been sharing pictures of their versions of the quirky drink, which can be made with optional added extras like syrup, orange peel, or even a sprig of rosemary as a garnish. Last year, the turmeric latte – also known as ‘golden milk’ – was the trendiest coffee around. The beneficial properties of the drink – usually made with either almond or coconut milk, ginger, turmeric, coconut oil and pepper – are said to include aiding digestion, acting as an anti-inflammatory and an antioxidant. Its celebrity fans include actress Gwyneth Paltrow, 44, whose lifestyle website Goop shared a recipe for the drink. Before that bulletproof coffee – coffee blended with ghee or butter – was touted as a way to boost energy and fat burning. But now Instagrammers from Brazil to Japan are ordering their coffees with a dash of tonic water. Tonic water is a carbonated soft drink in which quinine is dissolved. Originally used as a prophylactic against malaria, tonic water usually now has a significantly lower quinine content and is consumed for its distinctive bitter flavour. It is often used in mixed drinks, particularly in gin and tonic.
