A six-year-old boy genius has passed his maths GCSE exam – 10 years early. Sherwyn Sarabi sat two GCSEs maths higher papers alongside teenage students in May and June and was sent his results by email. His mother, Amanda said he passed with a grade D despite studying for only six months. “The one hour and 45 minutes for each paper was a little too long for him, and in the first paper he left the exam 35 minutes early as he was overwhelmed but he still managed to pass,” she said. The family has had to move from Barnsley to Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, in order for Sherwyn to go to Aysgarth School, in Wensleydale, a preparatory school for boys usually aged eight to 13, which will be more able to meet his needs. Mrs Sarabi said, “Sherwyn has an IQ in excess of 160 which is more than Einstein and Stephen Hawking. I had to call a lot of schools to ask if he could sit the GCSE with them because many felt it would be off-putting to the other older students, so I had to travel to Bradford with him for the exam.” Mrs Sarabi said she first realised her son was gifted when he was almost two and she took him on a routine visit to the doctor. “We were in the surgery and there was a large map of the world on the wall. “Sherwyn started naming the countries which surprised the doctor who asked what else he knew. “I said he could identify flags from around the world and read – he couldn’t believe it,” she said. By the age of four, Sherwyn had read every book his primary school had to offer, and in the last year his maths has progressed from Year 6 level to GCSE standard. Mrs Sarabi said, “Over the summer holidays last year we worked through the maths syllabus for years seven, eight and nine in just two months. I contacted a tutor to help me and he was also astounded at how much Sherwyn knew. He is a normal child who loves to play, ride his bike and play musical instruments including piano and violin – but he has an enormous appetite for learning.”
