PTI leader’s condition worsens due to ‘police torture’

Published on: October 30, 2016 3:54 AM

ISLAMABAD: Police and Adiala Jail authorities on Saturday kept the arrested PTI leader Haibatullah rather than shifting him to a hospital timely during heart pain.

Haibatullah who was elected vice chairman from Bhara Kahu union council on PTI ticket was arrested from PTI Youth Convention at E-11 on Thursday. Haibatullah told police soon after his arrest that he was having chest pain but his request fell on deaf ears. Police officials told him

When he was shifted to jail his condition deteriorated and heart pain aggravated, but even then the police refused to remove his handcuffs. When doctors confirmed that his condition has deteriorated then he was shifted to PIMS in handcuffs. He was operated upon forthwith and two stents were installed in his heart. Haibatullah is still unconscious.

When contacted, Professor Akhtar Bandesha of cardiac centre told Daily Times, “I had asked police to unlock his handcuffs so that blood flow could be ensured. But police insisted that they should be given this direction in writing that unlocking handcuffs is a must. I gave this directive in writing and they removed handcuff. I had told police that he was not an accused and was a patient for us and his being in hand cuffs could pose life threat to him. Because additional burden on hands can pose serious risk to his life.”

Haibatullah’s cousin said Haibatullah’s condition worsened after police tortured him after his arrest.

“My cousin was ridiculed in Adial jail and medical aid was provided to him after 33 hours. My cousin is waging the war of life and death but federal police has handcuffed him as if some terrorist is under treatment. Human rights organisations should raise voice against it,” he deplored.
