
LAHORE: The inaugural Chairman WAPDA Amateur Golf Championship will tee off on Friday (30 Nov) at the Defence Raya Golf and Country Club Golf Course here. The championship will be contested over three days. Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Muhammad Zafar, General Manager Sports of WAPDA, stated that WAPDA intended to use the championship to raise awareness about water shortage and building water reservoirs for posterity. Also present on the occasion were Col (r) Asif Mehdi, Advisor Sports, Muhammad Razzaq, General Secretary, Saqlain Zahoor Raja, DG Sports, Shafqat Rana, Advisor Sports, Shahid Javed Khan, Tournament Director, Abid Rana DG (PR), Brig (r) Sikander Hayat of Defence Raya and Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed.
Eligible to participate in this vent are registered amateurs with a handicap of 12 and below. Being a national event, the championship has attracted skilled golf players from all over the country. Besides the top amateurs, also eligible to participate are veterans, senior amateurs and women. On the final day there will also be an invitational event. The prizes at stake are attractive and besides trophies the winners will get useful golf equipment related gifts. In numerical terms, the competing hopefuls add up to a total of 320 aspirants and include 140 amateurs, 70 seniors, 30 women, 20 veterans and 60 in the invitational.
