PTI chief challenges rejection of NA-53 Islamabad nomination papers

Published on: June 20, 2018 11:41 AM

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan on Wednesday challenged rejection of his nomination papers for NA-53 Islamabad constituency.

Khan, filed an appeal in the appellate tribunal, seeking that Tuesday’s rejection verdict by the returning officer (RO)  is repealed .

According to PTI chief’s appeal, the  RO’s verdict is against the Constitution.

Earlier on Tuesday, RO scrutinising Khan’s NA-53 Islamabad constituency nomination papers had rejected his candidacy along with that of former Prime Minister (PM) Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Mehtab Abbasi and Ayesha Gulalai.

The RO had rejected the candidates nomination papers on grounds that they had failed to properly fill out the affidavit attached with the nomination papers.

Earlier on Tuesday, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP)  concluded its sritinization process of nomination papers, forming six appellate tribunals in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, eight in Punjab, four in Sindh, two in Balochistan and one in Islamabad.

The decision of the rejection appeals will be announced by the tribunals on June 27, after which a final list of candidates will be shared.

As per ECP’s schedule the last date for withdrawal of candidature will be June 29. The allocation of electoral symbols  and publication of final list will be on June 30.

The general elections will be contested on July 25, 2018 under the supervision of the army along with the interim government.
