LAHORE: Virat Kholi’s fan from India, who had attempted self-immolation over the skipper’s dismissal in the first innings of a Test match against South Africa on Friday, has died.
Reportedly a 63-year-old retired railway employee, Babulal Bairva from Madhya Pradesh, had set himself on fire after Kholi got out for five runs during the first innings.
“When Kholi got out [he became very upset] and took a bottle of kerosene and poured it on his head and set himself ablaze,” a police official said.
Babulal was rushed to the hospital for treatment where he succumbed to his burn injuries on Tuesday.
Police said they were investigating all possible aspects of the incident.
This is not the first incident of its kind. Following India’s defeat against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy 2017 final, an Indian cricket team fan in Bangladesh had committed suicide, jumping in front of the train.
