Karachi University student ‘abducted’ from house

Published on: January 4, 2018 9:45 PM

LAHORE: A Karachi University student and his younger brother have been reportedly abducted from their house in Maddu Goth, located near the university campus.

A friend of Mumtaz Sajidi Baloch, the abducted student, said that law-enforcement agencies (LEAs) personnel in plainclothes picked up Mumtaz along with his brother from their residence on Thursday, adding the LEAs personnel were accompanied by a heavy contingent of police.

He further said that Mumtaz was a final year student in masters’ programme of Department of International Relations while his brother Kamran had recently done intermediate.

The family of the abducted hailed from Balochistan’s Khuzdar district, he added.

The friend claimed that Mumtaz was used to participating in civil society protests but he was not affiliated with any political party.

The parents of the ‘abducted’ students have appealed the authorities to release their children.

Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) Vice Chairman (Sindh) Asad Iqbal has also showed concerns over the alleged abduction, saying if the students have done any crime it should be made public.

“Plainclothes personnel picked up the men in those vehicles which don’t have number plates,” Asad said.

“If Baloch students are picked up in this manner, the situation will move towards anarchy,” said the HRCP official.

It was not the first incident of its kind in KU. Another Baloch student was made disappeared from the campus two months ago.

No First Information Report (FIR) of today’s incident has been registered yet.
