IRGC claims strike on US base in Syria

Published on: July 17, 2026 6:01 PM

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it targeted a US special operations command centre at al-Tanf in Syria on Friday. Iranian state media described the strike as retaliation for the killing of Iranian soldiers in Iranshahr. Reuters could not independently verify the claim, and US officials did not immediately comment.

According to Iranian state media, the IRGC said the attack targeted the US facility at al-Tanf near the Syria, Jordan, and Iraq border. However, the US military had announced in February that it completed its withdrawal from the al-Tanf base. There was also no immediate response from the Syrian government regarding Iran’s claim.

The reported strike comes as Syria continues to distance itself from the wider regional conflict. President Ahmed al-Sharaa has repeatedly said Syria will avoid involvement unless the country comes under direct attack. Regional tensions have intensified following conflicts involving Iran, Israel, Lebanon, and Iraq.

Meanwhile, the IRGC also claimed Iran maintains full control of the Strait of Hormuz. It warned that no oil or gas exports would pass through the strategic waterway while US attacks continued. The statement adds to growing concerns over regional energy security and global oil supplies.

The latest claims have not been independently verified, and official confirmation from US authorities remains unavailable. The developments highlight rising tensions between Iran and the United States as military and diplomatic pressures continue across the Middle East.
