Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the introduction of a new “Apna Ghar, Mehfooz Ghar” category under the provincial government’s flagship “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” programme to help improve the safety of structurally weak homes and reduce the risk of building-related accidents.

The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by the chief minister, where officials reviewed the progress of the housing programme and discussed measures to strengthen residential safety. The new initiative is intended to support homeowners in repairing or reinforcing houses considered unsafe or at risk of structural damage.

During the briefing, officials informed the meeting that Rs217.8 billion has been allocated for the “Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar” programme. They also said interest-free financing has been approved for more than 180,000 homeless families to help them obtain affordable housing through easy installment plans.

According to an official statement, homeowners with dilapidated or structurally vulnerable houses will be eligible for financial assistance of up to Rs500,000 to carry out safety improvements and essential repairs. The government also plans to provide interest-free loans of up to Rs1 million in easy installments for the construction of new homes or the addition of extra floors.

Speaking during the meeting, Maryam Nawaz said the Punjab government would assist families in making unsafe buildings more secure and ensuring better living conditions. She stressed that there would be no compromise on the implementation of the province’s flagship welfare projects.

The chief minister also directed officials not to place any additional financial burden on low-income families and instructed that the existing eligibility criteria and loan procedures should not become more difficult for applicants.

She said effective governance is reflected through practical measures rather than statements, emphasizing the need for timely action to address public concerns. The provincial government expects the enhanced housing initiative to improve residential safety while expanding access to affordable housing for vulnerable families across Punjab.
