Iran said it held a brief discussion with the United States on its nuclear programme during talks in Switzerland. The exchange matters because nuclear tensions affect regional stability and international diplomacy. The discussion involved officials from both countries but did not advance into formal negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed that the American delegation raised its positions on the nuclear issue during the meeting. However, he stressed that the conversation remained limited in scope. According to Baghaei, no detailed negotiations took place between the two sides.
The comments came as international attention remains focused on Iran’s nuclear activities and its relations with Western countries. Any direct engagement between Tehran and Washington is closely watched by global powers. As a result, even brief discussions can signal potential diplomatic openings.
Baghaei nevertheless rejected suggestions that formal nuclear negotiations had begun. He said the talks did not address technical details or specific aspects of the programme. Therefore, Iranian officials do not consider the exchange the start of a new negotiating process.
Meanwhile, the Switzerland meeting provided a rare opportunity for both sides to communicate their positions. Although the nuclear issue was mentioned, officials indicated that discussions remained preliminary. Further diplomatic contacts would likely be required before any substantive negotiations could begin.
