Iran players receive US visas ahead of World Cup

Published on: June 6, 2026 4:06 PM

Iran’s national football team has received visas to enter the United States ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to a US official, easing uncertainty just days before the team’s opening match of the tournament.

The development comes after Iranian officials had previously expressed concern over delays in the visa process. While players have now reportedly been cleared for entry, several members of the team’s administrative delegation are still awaiting approval.

According to Iranian media reports, those still without visas include senior football federation officials and media representatives accompanying the squad. The affected staff members are expected to travel with the team to Mexico while efforts continue to secure the necessary documentation for entry into the United States.

Iran is scheduled to arrive in Tijuana, Mexico, where the team will establish its tournament base before traveling to match venues. The decision to use Mexico as a base reportedly followed logistical and visa-related considerations.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will be the largest edition of the tournament to date. Iran is set to begin its Group G campaign against New Zealand in Los Angeles on June 15 before facing Belgium and Egypt in subsequent matches.

The visa issue has attracted attention due to ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran. US officials have indicated that individuals with links to designated military organizations could face additional scrutiny or restrictions when seeking entry into the country.

Despite political challenges, Iranian officials have emphasized their commitment to participating in the World Cup and maintaining a focus on sport. Diplomats have also described the team’s participation as a positive opportunity for international engagement through football.

With the players now cleared to travel, preparations for Iran’s World Cup campaign are expected to continue as planned, while efforts remain underway to resolve the outstanding visa cases involving team staff members.
